Demographics

Population:

45.8 million inhabitants (August, 2009). Density: 77,3 inhabitants per sq. km.

The industrial regions in the east and southeast are mostly populated; 67.2 percent of the population lives in urban areas.

The five largest cities are:
  1. Kiev 2.6 million
  2. Kharkiv 1,4 million
  3. Dnipropetrovsk 1 million
  4. Odessa 1 million
  5. Donetsk 1 million

Welfare:

Nowadays Ukraine is strengthening the social support. There are lots of programs concerning the remuneration of labor and provision of pensions systems. Ukrainian social policy is solving a line of problems like overcoming poverty, improving national programs on medical social labor rehabilitation of invalids, labor protection and safe vital activity. There are state programs on address support of needy layers of the population and state program on introducing new level of social protection of population in market conditions (the system of social insurance).

Education:

Education in Ukraine includes pre-school education, comprehensive secondary education, extra-school education, vocational technical education, higher education, graduate, postgraduate and doctoral education, self-education. Also there are the following educational levels: primary general education, basic general secondary education, full general secondary education, vocational education, basic higher education, full higher education. Citizens of Ukraine have the right to get daytime, evening or distant education.

The system of secondary and higher education in Ukraine is transforming now. The main objectives of the reforms are: decentralization of higher education system, development of a new financial mechanism. Also faculties and students will be given more academic freedom. Secondary schools, Institutes and Universities until recently have been funded by the State. Now there is quite a number of private fee-paying primary and secondary schools, some Universities have fee-paying departments, non-state Universities and Academies have appeared. Such private institutions are more flexible with admission and graduation requirements and course offerings.

One of the most important tasks for central and local authorities is to give equal possibilities in getting quality education for all citizens of Ukraine. The system of higher education in Ukraine has flexible structure and corresponds to modern European tendencies recognized by international organization.

Every year more than 200 thousand Ukrainians and citizens of other countries become students of educational institutions in Ukraine.

In 2008 functioned:
  • 670 – Colleges, Secondary and Vocational Schools;

  • 339 – Universities, Academies and Institutes.

  • Students: 387 per 10 000 citizens;

  • Teachers: 90 000.

Religion:

Orthodoxy is the predominant religion in Ukraine: today with some 70% of Ukrainians belong to this faith. Also there is a number of other religions in Ukraine: Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Christians, Ukrainian Catholics, Protestants and Jews.

A noticeable place in Ukraine's religious life is occupied by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. This church is the second by the number of religious communities and ranks first to the number of monasteries. There is also Roman Catholic Church.

Protestant churches are also well represented in Ukraine: Baptist, Pentecostal, Reformist, Adventist, Lutheran and other denominations.

During the past years non-traditional religious organizations (Charismatic, Mormon, Krishnaite etc.) have spread, though they do not influence the religious situation in Ukraine.

Ukraine is a multinational and multireligious country. So the Eastern and the Western traditions coexist here. This is the nation's great wealth and a source of spiritual integrity.

In 2008:
  • 57.35 – Orthodox,
  • 10.21 – Catholics,
  • 2.19 – Protestants,
  • 0.63 – Jews,
  • 3.2 - other religious minorities.
